WHO  ARE  WE?
Desert Sport Aviation, LLC
is a spanking brand new company starting operations on June 1, 2007 at Las Cruces International Airport.  The company has been formed to provide instruction to individuals seeking to fly light sport aircraft under the FAA’s new Light Sport Rule. Click Here.  A second objective is to assist these new Sport Pilots to find and purchase an appropriate light sport aircraft airplane or kit and help them get that aircraft into the air as soon as possible after they qualify as Light Sport Pilots.

We have two Light Sport Aircraft—Skyrangers- to offer for flight demonstrations and instruction.  NXXX was built in 2006, has only 70 hours on the airframe and engine, and will be the primary aircraft for instruction.  NXXXX was constructed in California in 2004, currently has 400 hours on airframe and engine, and will be used for flight demonstrations..   Both aircraft are powered by the well-known and reliable Rotax XXXX 100 hp engine providing cruise speeds in the 100 mph range.   The Skyranger has for several years running won 1st place in European Light Aircraft competition and is well known for its stability, safety and strength---it’s certificated to +6, -3 g’s..

Your flight instructor will be Robert W. (Bo) McCoy who is licensed by the FAA as a Sport Pilot Instructor  and also as a Sport Pilot Examiner.  Bo currently has over 1600 hours’ experience instructing in a variety of aircraft including ultralights.  He is able, therefore, to complete instruction to the Sport Pilot level, and then to examine these students for the actual Sport Pilot License---a one-stop-shop operation which will save students much time and money.    Also, Bo is well known in the area as one of the most patient and “mellow” flight instructors—no yelling at students from Bo!  Bo is also a certified A&P Mechanic who holds a Rotax repairman certificate.  If you buy a plane or kit from us, he can help you build it and repair it!  Bo has constructed, to date, 5 ultralight aircraft and is currently in process of completing a Preceptor N-3 pup, which closely resembles a smaller version of a Piper J-3 Cub.  We can instruct you, examine you, qualify you for your sport pilot license, help you find a kit or completed airplane, and get you flying ASAP!

On the administrative and marketing side, Barry H. Hill will handle the soft-side of the business.  He is currently certified as a Private Pilot, having over 700 hours experience in a variety of aircraft, including ultralight 3-axis and general aviation aircraft.  He also is a Basic Flight Instructor for weight shift trikes.  As a Foreign Service Officer (now retired) he has flown aircraft all over West, East and South Africa over the past 30 years.  He is fully aware of the capabilities of foreign manufacturers in supplying capable and well-built kit and completed light aircraft.  Barry is also in process of studying and preparing to become a Light Sport Aircraft Instructor.

Handling billing and accounting activities for the company is Shirley L. Hill, Barry’s wife, who currently helps keep space shuttle and space station parts calibrated and cleaned at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility.
